3 Reasons to Strengthen Your Core by Michael Christie, CPT

MikeCStrengthening your core, which consists of the muscles from your pelvis to your shoulders, is one of the most effective ways to help you look younger and feel better about yourself every day.

Here are 3 reasons why you should strengthen your core:

  1. It will make you thinner and taller. Really? Absolutely! When you strengthen your core, you will be able to pull in your belly button (leveling your pelvis) and flatten your tummy. This makes you look thinner. In addition, a strong core allows you to stand taller and pull your shoulders back. This makes you look taller. Taller and thinner is a good thing.
  2. You will have less pain. A strong core acts like a natural brace for your body. It supports and stabilizes your joints, especially in the area of the lower back. For many who experience lower back pain, core strengthening is the number one prescription for a healthier and pain free back.
  3. It will improve your performance. When you stabilize your core, it enhances your fine motor-skills (coordination). This allows you to react quickly and stay balanced, especially when on unstable surfaces. So, if you are a tennis player or skier, having a strong core can dramatically improve your performance and enjoyment of the sport.
