When was the last time that you got a good night’s sleep?
I’m talking about falling asleep quickly and STAYING asleep all night. If it has been a while, then you are in very good company. Over 70 million Americans suffer from the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep as long as desired, better known as insomnia.
Here are 3 reasons why it is important to get a good night’s sleep:
Sleep deprivation has been linked to an increase in hunger and appetite. The behavior that results from this can lead to weight gain. In a 2005 study conducted by the Archives of Internal Medicine, participants who were overweight were found to sleep fewer hours than those participants who were not overweight. So what is the link here? Think about it – if you are sleep deprived and running low on energy, you are more likely to reach for something that will give you a quick hit of energy like a doughnut or candy bar. Many times, someone who is sleep deprived will crave comfort foods like pizza, potato chips, or French fries to get you through a rough period during the day. The boost in energy these foods provide is temporary. The extra pounds gained from this type of eating activity can last forever.
Reduced Sex Drive
Researchers have determined that men or women who are sleep deprived express less interest in sex and lower libidos. Little or no energy, persistent exhaustion, and the stress associated with not sleeping are mostly to blame for this. Also, research has shown that men with poor sleep patterns have significantly lower levels of testosterone. Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. Low levels of this hormone results in a lack of sex drive in men.
Chronic sleep loss has been linked to a number of serious health problems such as heart attack, chronic heart disease, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes. Studies have shown that over 90% of men and women who have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep (insomnia) have another chronic health condition. The list goes on and on. Restful sleep is important for your health and well-being, so if you are not sleeping well, get help immediately.
