A physical therapist performs a gait analysis to evaluate the way in which you walk and/or run.
In doing so, they are looking to find inefficiencies and to identify any postural or movement-related problems in patients with or without injuries.
Patients with current injuries will benefit from gait analysis as the process helps the physical therapist identify the driver, or true source of the pain.
Because past traumas or postural problems can cause dysfunction and lead to future injuries, a preventative gait analysis is recommended for almost everyone as it reveals movement-related issues that can be treated before they become painful and problematic.
Elite Health Services Physical Therapists perform both visual and video gait analysis. With visual analysis, the physical therapist can pick up large and most small movement problems. Video analysis is more specific and is used to identify even smaller dysfunctions such as a movement problem with a runner that can lead to a breakdown at the end of a run, or with increased distance. With video gait analysis the therapist can utilize software that allows them to slow down the video and view the gait frame by frame.
Once your physical therapist identifies any dysfunctions you may have, various manual therapy techniques are used to improve or correct the poor movement patterns. The end result is often reduced pain and/or improved performance. This analysis information is then used to direct a personalized treatment plan and progression for future treatments. Patients often report feeling a significant difference in the way walking “feels” before and after a manual physical therapy treatment.
Gait analysis is just one of many important tools used by manual physical therapists to help them identify dysfunctions and treat pain and poor performance. Manual physical therapists can analyze all motions from activities of daily living to exercise mechanics and sporting movements.
